Re: My 1950 VH
Keith
When you remove the inner timing cover I would also carry out the Ariel modification to the timing cover as detailed in service bulletin 125. My advice there is be careful enlarging the hole as it is will be very close to another oil hole. Drags keep the ball and spring. After this mod has been done the likelihood of another return oil failure due to grit on the seat is almost zero as both seats would have to be dirty at the same time. But if the return line is sucking air due to a loose return pipe, or at the joint face between crankcase and timing cover, you will still have a problem.
I think there is a copy of the service bulletin in the library but if not PM me and I will email you a copy.

Re: My 1950 VH
Hi David,
I downloaded the service bulletin from the club website (thanks John for the link).
I have ordered a drill bit of the correct size and the ball and spring from Drags, so I'll carry out this mod, anyway, once I get the bits and before I put the machine back together again. I gather from the instruction that the ball rests up against the pump body since it is implied that the spring is inserted first into an enlarged hole in the timing case followed by the ball. The drawing appears to contradict this however. I trust the text is correct? It just seems odd, since the pump body doesn't have a seat.

Re: My 1950 VH
Hi Keith,
I think this is only fitted to the supply side pump on machines with the pressurised rocker feed (Pre 1952) and then the very last machines (1958 59).
The mod that David talks about is to fit a ball and spring (valve) as a back-up to the return pump; the bulletin says nothing about the insert being required here (not that it might not be needed).

yes the ball sits against the back of the oil pump and seats in the oil hole. You just have to remember each time you remove the oil pump that the ball and spring will pop out and drop onto the floor and possibly be lost.

Re: My 1950 VH
Huh ?? I thought that ball was kept in place by a small round 'stopper' with a hole and a ventury like shape on the inside that seats the ball.
This small 'stopper' has a even smaller 'lip' on the front where you are supposed to grab it if you want to take this assembly out.

Hi Vincent,
According to the bulletin it is only the feed side that has the insert; this is the same as on the machines with the pressurised rocker feed.

Re: My 1950 VH
I think the chances of me remembering about a loose ball after more than a couple of days would be very small. Even god put such things in a bag. I wonder how good the seal will be against an unmachined surface? Good luck. Keith.
