Hello Marco,
Thank you very much for sharing your Sq4 rebuild with us and congratulations on a job well done. I admire your machining skills and your innovative approach.
I am wondering why you decided to use the timing strobe light on the rear crank instead of the front. At 12 o'clock on the end of the front crank of mine I put one dot at TDC and another at fully advanced position i.e. with the #1 piston 5/16" BTDC for the 1000 cc bike or 3/16" BTDC for the 600 cc. With the strobe connected to the #1 cylinder cable it is fairly easy to set the correct timing for the electronic ignition system and to check if the ignition advances correctly. A tray or piece of sheet metal placed beside the bike collects the slight oil spray coming out of the motor and there is no need to cut a hole in a timing cover. What am I missing?
Regards, Chris

Truly amazing, noticed the Amal carb, I have a Solex 26 FH which would fit the 600 37 to 39 model lurking around my spares pool, I bought it at a jumble as a stop gap and up jetted it to get my project 4g started (I didn't have all the parts for my 26 ah) however I have now got the correct carb on mine and this is now surplus to requirements, if any one needs it for their project, send me a pm, it has the vertical butterfly and is the same as the one in the parts catalogue for those years on this site, could help you to get it going at least, the butterfly bearings are in great shape by the way.

Nothing. I was missing a good idea. Your way of working is also a good option. I wish i had heard that earlier. Otherwise: there is always some deviation between the timing of the rear and front crankshaft. I noticed that with the determination the TDC and the gauge in cilinder 1. Because of that I prefer the rear crank and connect the strobe to cilinder 1 or 3 because of the waste spark configuration.

Thanks. This is my workaround. This carb had a good price and in excellent condition. Nearly new. I have a Solex for the 1000 with a lot of wear in the butterfly. As you can see in the whole story, my goal was to improve or use some replacements for critical parts. I leave the magdyno, Solex and conrods in the box. Not for sale.

Congratulations on an excellent restoration with some significant improvements on the standard machine. Congratulations also on such a good first run. I am a few days behind you in taking my Square out for its first run but I don't anticipate doing a run of that length for some time.

Altough this is a fantastic Ariel, getting this (paper) means; it has wheels and is abel to roll the frame and engine in to the building, for that's the only rule for a European motorcycle getting in The Netherlands or redo an old Dutch paper.

The frame nr must be readeble, higher than 4 mm and more than 4 numbers, here are the old Harleys in difficulty (having no frame nr.).

@Paul,

I made already a few illegal test runs around my house and village last week late in the evening. After a few runs, together 45 km, everything was working as expected. I only lost the throttle stop screw :evil:

@Adrie,
You are right. I had an old vehicle registration which belongs to the frame. It was not registrated anymore and assigned to someone. It was an easy test to check if the frame number and paper had the same frame number. When equal i could keep the same old licenplate number which was issued in 1954.
