Re: KH primary chain alignment
I had my first decent run on the twin on Thursday with the local section of the VMCC. I did just over
50 miles of Chilterns back roads in Beds and Herts: no snatch, nicely lively and less than a
gallon of E10. What more could I ask for?
Just to keep me on my toes the clutch, a Burman composite friction one, not cork, was just beginning
to slip. Not really surprising as the clutch has the light springs for a cork clutch and not the
heavier ones necessary for composite clutches. This bike has a lot of nice touches, some of them
somewhat marred by previous owners not perhaps appreciating what they had.

Re: KH primary chain alignment
I agree that cork clutches are much smoother in take-up and lighter in action but
at the moment I don't have three usable cork plates but I do have a set of
heavy clutch springs. Maybe later . . .

Re: KH primary chain alignment
I'm jumping into this discussion as I am puzzled as to how to align the clutch chainwheel. When all is assembled and in position the chainwheel and outer clutch housing can slide along the needle roller bearing for about 2 - 4mm.
When I disconnect the shock absorber and spin the sprocket and chainwheel all looks good and sounds OK but, if I slightly push the clutch outer casing I can hear it rubbing against the chain case. I guess in the dynamic situation the chain will be self-aligning but I do not like the lateral slop and the possibility of contact with the case.
The plain and keyed thrust washers are correctly placed but they just control the bearing.
Should there be shims that fit over the mainshaft/needle-roller bearing end to position the chainwheel away from the case?
However I cannot see how a shim would be held in position.
Am I missing something here?
John

Re: KH primary chain alignment
That sounds like a lot of endfloat on the chainwheel. I wonder if someone
has modified it at some point. All being well I'll measure one this evening.

Re: KH primary chain alignment
I can't find a picture at the moment, but don't those thrust washers restrain the sprocket as well? They must be 3/16“ or so wide? Here's one at Drags:JohnReilly wrote: Mon Aug 26, 2024 9:47 am Should there be shims that fit over the mainshaft/needle-roller bearing end to position the chainwheel away from the case?
