Wondering why after 100 years this isn’t settled installation procedure?

Because Hydraulic Damping superseded it 80 Years ago?

My 1936 LG is in the final stages of assembly. Amongst the jobs yet to do is the fitting of grease nipples to the forks then adjusting and application of grease. So that is what I mean by greasing up - application of the grease gun to the grease nipples.

That said, I am mighty tempted to apply grease to the surfaces of the friction dampers as I find newly built girder forks to be a very harsh ride until the grease gets onto the friction surfaces.
