Just a follow up in case it helps anyone else - clutch drag cured, mainshaft nut on the kickstart end had come loose causing mainshaft endfloat which reduced clutch pressure plate lift enough to not free the plates fully.
There was still some mainshaft endfloat with the nut fully tight, cured by putting a 10 thou shim under the nut.
