this is very interesting about Beatrice Shilling .
i know its not ariel related but seems she had more than just a bit to do with fuel systems and modifications .
her bike was much same as my gramps norton with the "cricket bat " in it and i am more convinced of his story of blowing t e lawrences brough superior away and the speed he said he could attain on his norton ex tt racer .
on an ariel point i have just found out my dad had a 1937 ariel single bitsa when he was younger and i didnt know this .
alas my ariel single i have came too late for my dad to see it before he died a few years ago .
i see beatrice shilling redesigned the su carb for the spitfire , so maybe she had more to do with fuel system design , performance and modification than we think .
the article i pasted tells of her mods on her bike inlet tract to improve performance and evidently she still holds her speed record for brooklands today 106mph i think it says .
all i have left of my gramps norton is the rocker box spanner and a photo of him on it on top of local hill and one at the pub in tarrant hinton where he used to bump into lawrence of arabia on his way there !! .
i allways wanted a "single" and this is how i ended up with an ariel single .
funny that some of these "odd" products we find ourselves contemplating over or thinking they are useless actually conjur up other interesting finds that put more light onto who did what and where .
you tend to think its all a mans game but when you see someone like Beatrice and find out what she did , it puts a different perspective on it all .
