I notice the fellow in the Youtube video clamps the nut in a vice and puts a fork stanchion in the carb. body to unscrew it. Terrifying. Could this not shatter the carb body if the nut is too tight?

Re: Side float carburettor
Whats the difference between the short and long base nuts.....I knew once, but Ive forgotten.....yes ,I have both types.........I ve also asked before about using the carb body on its side(horizontal slide).....Triumph singles commonly did this.,and some JAPs too......What stops fuel running out the idle air bleed passage and the adjuster screw.?

Re: Side float carburettor
I wouldn't do it quite like that. What I've done is pass a large round bar right through the carburetter body and jet block and then undo the nut.charles.bulloch wrote:I notice the fellow in the Youtube video clamps the nut in a vice and puts a fork stanchion in the carb. body to unscrew it. Re: Side float carburettor
Those bottom nuts can be tight, best to loosen them with the carb bolted to the bike, which is the best way to hold the carb. The jet block should be a light drive fit in the body but can be much tighter, a little heat is better than hitting it and distorting the jet block.
Some bikes use the long nut but most use the long bottom nut. Only optional on the 6,76 and 276 size and not used on Ariels.

Re: Side float carburettor
OK got the nut off with an iron bar through the body (looks like the handle for the hydraulic bench!), now soaking the body in paraffin to loosen the jet block.
What thread is the throttle stop screw by the way? I have three, two are bent (how did that happen?) and all are very tight in the thread.

Re: Side float carburettor
They are 2BA, as is the air screw. There are some odd threads on Amal carbs - unusual sizes and pitches - for example the cable adjusters are 7/32 x 40 ME.

Re: Side float carburettor
Thanks for the reply, Simon. I've ordered stuff from Burlen and Feked to renovate the carb and have just released the jet block by clamping the jet in the vice and levering with wooden handles. Soaking in paraffin helps!
