WN/G oil pump

Hi all,
could someone know if Ariel oil pump part 2212-29 is the same as Triumph oil pump part 70-3072. They look on picture.

There is a Triumph pump that is almost the same, both designed by Val Page, but I don't know the Triumph number and the mounting holes are slightly different. With a file you can make it fit. New uprated pumps are available for the Ariel.

Hi Roger,
thanks for your answer. As you can see on the file attached, the left one 2212-29 was on my W/NG and the right one 70-3072 is a Triumph one.
The holes are the same, but the body of the Triumph one is too longer, and can not be fitted on the my bike.
Someone got experience with that or advices ?

You have to cut the body and shorten the plungers but that pump puts out far too much oil. Look how much bigger the diameter of the delivery plunger is. I put one on my VCH for a short time. The "Porting" holes don't quite line up either. Nev

and if you cut the plungers they become open tubes, they are hollow.

Not all of them If you get one that is you have to plug it. Ariel singles don't like a lot of oil was always the word with racing. They don't scavenge that well and run hot due oil drag. My W/NG is my most used bike and it's had no engine attention since 1997 and it's done about 16K miles with the ORIGINAL oil pump and 3 comp rings only.. . Nev

A while ago I thought that increasing the pump volume would be a benefit.
I now know that to much oil just makes for a lot of drag within the bearings.
On a ball/roller bearing engine it works against it.
On engines with plain bearings it does make sense to get more flow/pressure.
Before that light went on :idea: I modified a Triumph Morgo pump, bytheway, these have solid plungers.
see pics. the bronze body was shortened and plungers shortened to fit.
The two mounting holes need a tiny bit moving towards eachother.
Bottom holes needed a bit of relocating as you can see.
The (Triumph) Morgo pump has a thicker body because the plungers are larger in diameter.
So the 'hands' on top of the plungers sit away from the drive block on a Ariel.
I milled the mating surface lower but still had to make a shim/spacer to get the driving block to meet up with the excenter on the camshaft.
This spacer had two ears to prevent it from going awol.
So....nice try but useless :lol:
I think Morgo makes plunger pumps for Ariels, but with a lower capacity as those Triumph ones.
maybe someone knows if these 'new' Morgo Ariel pumps are any good ?
Still, any Ariel pump that still pumps is good enough for most.

That's certainly going to pump too much oil. The drag comes from the flywheels running in it as the scavenge system can't handle the extra oil and the cases get really hot and the motor loses power from the oil drag of the flywheels. Racers found this out. Some use scrapers to help keep the oil near the pick up. Gravity is only one player in where the oil in motors ends up. You could sleeve the supply plunger hole. You can also shorten the plunger to reduce the amount, but that's something to be done carefully if at all. It's easy to think "More oil More better" but sometimes NO. I've had more trouble with my 50 VCH oiling than any other bike i've had. The biggest pump I tried was a Triumph one that is LESS than the morgo in flow. The quality looks good on the morgo. Maybe I'll put one on the KH . Nev

As I understand it, the Morgo oil pump for the Ariel singles was produced for the Trials boys, who tend to operate at low revs. That makes some sort of sense to me. Of course, people then put the Morgo pumps in standard road going bikes which operate at much higher revs and found the consequences of over oiling.

Interesting remark.....
Morgo does not mention that it should be used at low revs :?
oh well, why bother if you can sell your stuff to some unsuspecting Arielist :lol:
