re-wind a magneto?

Post by Dave.Barkshire »

Can anyone recommend someone to re-wind a magneto? It's a 1927 EIC single cylinder.

I've had no luck with the following...

TheMagnetoGuys are too busy
APL are too busy
Tony Cooper has no parts for EIC and suggests I phone around
Dave Lindsley no response from email or phone pick-up
Ariel Red Hunter VH1 1938
BSA L27 1927
Velocette MSS 1939
AJS Model 20 1953
Triumph Scrambler 900

Dave,

A couple of years ago I had an electric pump motor from the power braking system on my Toyota Landcruiser 'Amazon' re-wound by "Robson & Francis Rewinds":

http://www.robsonandfrancisrewinds.co.uk/contact/

Their website doesn't mention magnetos but I have just e-mailed them asking if they can tackle them - I copied-in a link to this thread.

They have a good reputation in the Landcruiser community and it would be good if they could add mags to their range.

I'll let you know what they say.

I used Old Iron Engineers to overhaul my magneto.

Good job done, nice fat spark now.

Pricing OK, return packing good.

Magnetos have some very fine wire in them and require specialist equipment and skills, motor re-winders will not be able to handle them.

Well, I received a reply from Robson & Francis Rewinds and they USED to renovate Magnetos, but not an more.

This is Mike's reply:

"Dear Mr Murphy

Sorry for the delay in replying, your e mail was in our spam folder for some reason

I am additionally sorry as we no longer rewind magnetos, there are quite a few companies that do rewind them still but I don’t know the quality of most of them

We do supply Steve from the Magneto Guys in Hailsham 01323 840203 who seems to have a very good reputation but long delivery times or Dave Lindsley 01568 617750 I believe still does quite a few

Sorry I cant be of more help

Regards

Mike"

As ever, they are really helpful. Pity they don't still work on Magnetos as I'm sure they would be good at it.

Interested to know how much an overhaul costs with Old Iron, and their turn around time. I also have an EIC mag that needs overhauling sometime soon.

I did leave a message on their answer phone this week but no reply. Have all the UK magneto winders been abducted or gone to live in Barbados?
