VB chaincase oil leak

hi the screw is a long one with a taper to a point, some cases do not have a hole that go right through the inner case and just use a small button head screw in the outer case and the oiler for the rear chain comes off the oil tank i have had this when i put another outer case on mine i see it just had a little button screw and not a long taper one with a spring and the oil was leaking out of the rear case

That is a good point. The screw Alan shows is defintely not tapered to a point. It seems to be the correct location though, as when I poke a wire through the screw hole, it comes out at the spout! It is a flat ended screw, so I wonder whether even if it was fully screwed in, it blocks off the spout?

No oiler for the chain from the oil tank.

I've got one that's been cut off at the end of the threads and the hole in the rear case blocked off. It's a common modification.

The later ('56 on) chaincases with the wick feed from the oil tank (and the FERC) still have the threaded hole in the outer but's it's blanked (to the outside) with a short screw - wonder if you've got one of those fitted, it won't go anywhere near deep enough to obstruct he hole on the other side.
Make sure you've got the proper taper adjuster screw (and spring), if you don't want to use the drip just screw the adjuster fully in (as has been said) - it'll stop up the hole in the inner before it binds up on the outer.

hi mark the screw that alan has posted up is the one you need and a spring i think it's the later Ariels with the fully enclosed rear chain guard thats has the oil feed from the oil tank and no hole in the inner primary chaincase , and the outer case just has a small screw, just get along screw and grind it like a point and find a spring to stop the screw undoing or get one from drags or john budgen

This is all very useful. Many thanks. I certainly do not have the tapered screw. All I have is a flat ended screw around an inch or so long which will never block up the hole on the other side. I think I'll just block the hole up in any event. The drive chain is easily lubed up without it. I would also like to verify that the hole is the source of the excess oil being sprayed about.
