Reading the description,it sounds to me that the ball bearing in the drive end of the dynamo has disintegrated and blown the end cover off......a common cause for this is excessive heat caused by slippage of the fibre gear.......which will also cook the mag windings in the adjacent armature.

You need to get the Magdyno right. I know it's been DONE but that doesn't make it all OK now. Don't try to force any sprockets off or hold the armature by the points assembly. You NEED the correct puller. It's easy to end up with a bent armature shaft if you monster it or run a chain too tight. You could easily have a seizing exhaust valve. it needs about .003" clearance in the guide . The inlet can have very little. and usually is not a problem..Nev

Dont make the mistake of thinking that the magdyno s been done ,the genny is ok........its quite likely the mag was sent for repair without the genny.,and the bearings havent been greased for 20 years.............this reminds me of friend who bought a Studebaker car,in a town in NQ.a thousand miles away, and decided to drive it home to save money.......".The seller assured me it had been in daily use"......which was a bit of an exaggeration.

Thanks Ken, I don't have Facebook myself although my wife does, I'm sure she will appreciate my interest in bikes invading every aspect of her life :)

I picked up an Elora valve compressor at Ardingly on Sunday so the head can come off and I'll clean up the exhaust valve as Dave and Nev suggested

Cheers, Steve

I'm based in Kent. The advise on the Magdyno is very much appreciated, I'm pretty sure I would have made a schoolboy error without a steer in the right direction. I've bought the necessary extractor, new gaskets and two 5ba screws for the end of the dyne from Draganfly

I managed to get in touch with the chap who sold it to me, 'Rode it regularly', that turned out to mean a couple of miles every now and again. Never mind, I love the bike so fingers crossed, I'm going in

Cheers, Steve

reminds me of a very nice ES2 I bought about 10 years ago. .....Wonderful stories of nightime rallies, going on the 3 day singles tour........no ,he wasnt single ,he had a very pretty wife who liked bikes!.........obvious dreaming when i got the bike checked out,a very nice older restoration, but with hard to find parts missing, and a new generator he bought wouldnt charge, because it was wrong rotation......Sadly ,he died a couple of years ago from a rare blood disorder that killed him just a week after diagnosis. Some kind of leukaemia.

Hi Steve,
Here are a couple of Lucas documents that will help you identify your Magdyno parts :-
G24-40 Magdynos.pdf
(4.16 MiB) Downloaded 190 times
E01-11,15 Dynamos and supersession chart.pdf
(2.69 MiB) Downloaded 179 times
Where are you in Kent ?
Good luck with it,
Regards,
Keith.
