Sq4 mk1 otto gasket torque settings

Post by peterR »

I am about to fit my mk1 head and have an otto gasket and where the info refers to torque setting for a mk1 it simply says "Torque reduced". From trolling the web it is probally safe to use 10ft/lb but maybe someone can give me the correct figures. Also i am using stainless studs and nuts. This creates another discussion point. Stainless is susceptible to galling so i was going to use some loctite anti seize which i beleive may have an impact on the torque settings.

Any info will be much appreciated.

Yes have read those posts. I am somewhat confused with the statement "Torque Reduced" reduced to what?
I have decided to start with 10ft/lb wet (anti seize) which from reading various info says when using anti seize to set torque to 85% of dry torque. I am using anti seize to prevent stainless to stainless galling.
Would still like to hear what others have done.

Cheers

Follow the instructions from Bruce Longman ive just followed is instructions on my 1950 mk1 and just short of 1000 miles now and not a problem
He revised the setting given on drags web site depends on what studs you are using to what settings give him a ring if you’re a member of the club the torque of 2 ftlb on some of the nuts doesn’t seem much but believe me it works if you follow his instructions

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately I live in Australia and time difference and long distance calling is a problem. I have installed acmestainless studs and also using their stainless nuts. To prevent galling i have used loctite anti seize. There appears to be a lot of different views on what torque to use. I purchased my otto gasket from draganfly and the instruction sheet had draganfly settings and the otto gasket instructions simply said "reduced torque". Thats great but what was it reduced to.
I finally decided to set the torque to 10ft/lb. It's interesting you mention 2ft/lb. Do you have the otto figures to use from Bruce?

Cheers
Peter

PS I tried to PM you but not sure if it worked

I will find them out and see if i can had as a attachment some time today
The problem with over torque is it pulls the studs out when the engine get hot due to the expansion of the alloy exceeding the
stretch of the bolt

Thanks much appreciated. I think with stainless studs i am using the coefficient of expansion is similar to the aluminum and less stressful on the studs than steel.
