how do you get to them? can't find any access to them apart from taking the body off, i have a 1960 leader.

They are secured inside the frame and are accessible through the hole in the bottom of the glove compartment.

I have recently bought an Arrow. Borrowed the coil to try on another bikes, had 'tank' off and even then was ruddy fiddly to get one off. Bracket on coil had captive nuts, but would guess you need to remove main body cover to get to the heads of the bolts.Sorry, not much help, I expect one of those better qualified will be along soon.

can't get to them that way, can't even see them . the book says they can be withdrawn via an access hole but i don't know where this is as i can't find it, are the early leaders different from the later ones?

Some are attached to the bottom of the frame, others to the top but all are "accessible" via a rectangular cutout in the top of the beam.
I fitted captive bolts (head downwards then a nut securing the bolt) to the brackets on mine so it was a bit easier to get them into position but still a bit of a struggle.

They are not easy to get to but they do come out through the hole in the frame. I have repositioned mine with longer HT leads into the toolbox in the dummy tank. Very easy to check/eliminate any coil or wiring problems. I have foam packing material around them to keep them from shaking about.
I did wonder if they might overheat but have now done over 800 miles without a problem.
