Wheels - Can you Identify Them ??

Post by Bob.Murphy »

Here's a little 'non-Ariel' teaser for you.

Today I took a trip North to "The Black Isle" to collect the mortal remains of a Triumph Tiger Cub (there isn't much of it left, but it does have a frame and engine).

The bits included three wheels; unfortunately only one is Tiger Cub - but what are the other two from??

The front has a full-width alloy hub, a TLS brake, 18" rim and the speedometer drive coming out of the brake back plate. I think it may be Japanese, but what do the Brains Trust think ??

That's a Coach Bolt holding the brake to the hub by the way  .

The rear has a very small brake drum, a 17" rim and four-bolt mounting for the sprocket. Could this be from a Honda Cub ??

That front TLS brake is quite intriguing and I think it deserves to be laced into something that will make use of it :? . I wonder if it could be made to fit a set of Triumph heavyweight forks :D

Hi,

I think this are japanese wheels, you can dismantle the tls brake plate and have a look on it from the inside. There must be a sign or a cast in mark of the producer.

Kind regards!

Would that rear wheel fit in a swinging arm frame Bob? It looks as the sprocket would have shock absorption through the bolt holes.

Hi Nick
I'm in your lovely country at the moment. But not with my Ariel though. I'm in Sibrenic. Whereabouts do you live?

The front one looks like Honda CB 125 (1970ies) to me. I guess ist a good brake and much superior to the FWH Ariel wheels.
Hope that helps

Following further research, and comments on another site, the wheels appear to be from a Honda CB175.

One of the comments was that the front is a popular upgrade for MZs.

I'll hang on to them until an opportunity to use them arises 8-) .

I thought they looked the same as a Honda CB360 that I had a few years ago. Definitely Japanese

A neighbour (who has had more bikes than hot dinners) tells me that the '(HM)' casting mark on the front brake shoes is for "Honda Motors".

So at least that bit is right ;) .

It does look very similar to that of a CB175:

They'll be taking root at the back of the outbuilding until an opportunity arises.
