Hey Guys
Pulled my engine down for rebuild and discovered some naked truths about 65 year old engines that have seen a lot of use.
The crankcases are matching, but have a stripped and badly repaired thread for the sump and a broken screw in another thread.
Am going to make a stepped stud from stainless and convert the rest to 1/4" BSW studs.
You can see the offending one on the bottom left. Will have to go at least a 3/8 BSF as that is what I have and step it down to 1/4 WHIT
Regards
Walter

Re: 1951 NH crankcase damage
Walter,
I have used 'Lumiweld' to repair stripped thread holes.
The cases have to be scrupulously clean and when they are hot (360 deg I think) use a stainless rod to scrape the inner surface clean. The 'Lumiweld' then fuses properly. It is very strong and can be machined, drilled and tapped.
Its useful stuff and I have a couple of repairs to do on my Panther crankcases which will be at least as strong as the original alloy.
Bob.

Guys
Decided on making a 3/8 x 1/4 Whitworth stud and get rid of the bolts for the sump altogether. Used an existing 10mm stainless bolt and reduced the shank to 3/8" and carefully machined the 1/4" reduced shank.
