sq4 brake mod
sq4 brake mod
got fed up of a poor front brake so i have done this, keeping the original forks so the original wheel can be put back if needed.
BSA 8 inch front wheel as fitted to goldstar's and early A65's , wheel rebuilt and powder coated by central wheel, tls brake plate bought at the stafford show in April 26, there was a guy there who still makes them. new wheel bearings as i needed a different size to the BSA ones, new spindle made from EN16 t and a top hat spacer made to fit the brake plate and the new spindle which also gets the wheel central, torque arm made from stainless ,
and it WORKS, it now stops very quickly, needs very little pressure on the brake lever, got to be careful not not to pull to hard as i think it could lock the front wheel.

Hi Ken
Nice mod but I think I'd settle the inner tube and tighten the valve nut before riding too far
Regards Mick

Re: sq4 brake mod
what do you mean bt settle the tube? its fine and the valve nut is tight, and the wheel has been balanced, it is a lot more stable at speed with the new tyres , Avons on both wheels. and had it up to a fair speed without problems.,

Re: sq4 brake mod
Where did you find the Avons or have you had them for some time?

Hi Ken
Sorry if I've caused offence, I thought, looking at the photo that the valve nut was loose, it doesn't look to be snugged up to the rim, the valve angle made me think the inner tube was not aligned with the valve hole in the rim so I would have deflated the inner tube, tighten the valve and re-inflated to cure this.

Re: sq4 brake mod
i think thats just the angle i took the photo from, bike was on its sidestand and i was not directly in front of it as there was not enough space for that, so it was all on a bit of an angle.
Re: sq4 brake mod
bought the Avon Tyres early this year, think i bought them from the vintage tyre co, did not have many left but they did have the right ones for the sq4. i know goodyear bought Avon and closed the Melksham factory and moved production to Germany, I have also heard from good sources that they will be making bike tyres again sometime next year with quater 2 being mentioned as a possible start date.
Re: sq4 brake mod
just had a look at vintagetyres.com they still list the tyre for the rear of the sq4 as being in stock but not the front one.
