In practise they are not much use and a small LED torch works better for night time breakdowns especially if the breakdown is electrical, the trouble light probably won't be much use under those circumstances. I would simply restore the enamel finish and leave it as non-working.

The missing/dislocated contact looks like this - {upper complete, lower dismantled.}

It looks like the sprung fibre washers thing could be rescued from a similar vintage Lucas car side lamp?

Nice picture Mark. That will be very useful if John decides to take me up on my offer.
Cheers, Chris.

That's a useful point, Vincent. It would explain the lamp turning up on an early bike. If the machine started life as a civilian NG that was impressed in 1939-40, it could well have had the panel-tank-era fittings, which wouldn't have carried over to the proper WD-spec W/NG.

So whether it belongs depends on what the bike actually is. If it's a genuine early impressed machine, I'd keep it. If it's a later W/NG, Roger's suggestion of tidying it up as a non-working piece is probably the safer route. Does the frame or engine number help pin down which it is?

The numbers will enable me to tell you who it was despatched to, the model and the military contract number if it was military

We have all 3 versions of this lamp, and I don't think they are too expensive. However, you should take a close look at which system your instrument panel uses. 8-)
