Roger Gwynn wrote: Sun Oct 18, 2026 10:53 am The reason that the seal does not fit is because it is still for a BSA not for an Ariel. As explained on the Draganfly website some gearboxes can be converted to a garter oil seal but some cannot, it depends on the year of the shell. Let me have the casting number form the shell and I can date it for you. As I said earlier the gearbox appears to be from 1938 or later but could be a collection of bits.
The valve lifter will probably work as it is and could be used as oil leaks will not be a problem but really the bush should be replaced and probably the shaft as well.
HI Roger thanks for your answer,

In the outer shell i can read 1/BAP E and M/3?

Then on the outer covers 3BA M / XII :?: and on the exterior cover 4-BA M/6

I'm reading your answers here viewtopic.php?t=14342 that already sheds some light but i would appreciate any additional comment :)

Some more pics if they help

1/BAP M/3 is 3000-35 used 1935-36 all models. Although the recess for the output gear bearing appears to be deep enough to take the conversion. "a check can be made by measuring the depth of the housing, if it is 11/16” our seal conversion will not fit, the depth of housing on the later gearboxes is 13/16” and will accommodate the seal conversion." from Draganfly website.
3BA M/XII is 3012-36 used 1936-52
4-BA M/6 is 3022-33 used 1933-34 but it should read 16 not 6 as it has the 1935 onwards clutch arm, it is possible to see where the 1 is missing, this makes it 3022-36 in use until 1948

Hi Roger many thanks, its really incredible this sleuthing work !!
Could you shed some light on which two surfaces exactly should be measured to determine the housing depth? Just to double check i'm measuring this distance (in red) from the bearing face to the bottom of the circlip groove. An in this case the measurement is roughly 4mm with a crappy ruler + 17mm of the URB 6207 bearing comes up to roughly 21mm which could match with the 13/16”. I'll pickup the vernier caliper from the boat tomorrow as i dont have any here.

I would have though that it would be measured to the outside face but obviously not as it is either 11/16 or 13/16, yours must be the latter!
