1930s VH500 - baffles or not?

Post by Simonpsmith »

Quick question to the knowledgeable :D
Did the silencers originally have a baffle fitted or were they straight through?

I think the original Burgess silencer had a internal deflector plate rather than a full baffle, halfway between straight through and baffle.
Someone else more knowledgeable may add to this.

See the parts book for whatever year your bike is. It will either show ex pipes with baffles, sometimes as a separate part, in which case the silencers are empty. If no baffles are shown the silencers will or should be baffled.

6032-32 would seem to be the part number.

ANY back pressure will reduce the Power on Most bikes, and it can be by quite a lot. I don't like Having a" holes drilled' section on the end of the pipe entering the Muffler. In my experience it better to use the Muffler body as an expansion place and treat the Exit pipe with the Baffles, Burgess mufflers were used on Scotts and the Military W/NG. I treasure the Ones I have. Some mufflers can be quite Heavy and expensive. A straight through is not only illegal but antisocial and does nothing for the Hearing of someone following you OR the reputation of the Bike fraternity. Nev
