1934 OHC 4F 600 project

Post by paul.jameson »

I bought the basis of this project about 18 months ago and decided today to do a loose assembly to see what is missing, at least in terms of the large parts. Although the engine is not yet assembled it came with new big ends done by Alpha and a newly rebored cylinder and pistons. I do have rather more of the gearbox than is shown but I don't yet have a complete clutch.

It will be some time before the bike is ready for the road..................

Oh wow, very neat. That will keep you busy for a while. I am jealous of the headlight and front fender 😆

I'm sure it will turn out fine, under your craftsmanship,.They'd have to have been a remarkable bike in their day. The original "Vision" was to have had an integral gearbox driven from the gears that connect the cranks. THAT would have been a complex bit of engineering. The earlier ones had a double downtube frame similar in most respects to the Slopers. Nev

Great—it’s rare to see a thread about such a rare motorcycle. I’m looking forward to it.

Those early Cammies would not have had a lot of 'Flywheel effect". Nev

Greg,

Don't be too envious of the front fender - it is lacework in places so needs quite a lot of attention:

Nev,

Thank you for your kind words. These machines can be a great bike to ride - I did over 16,000 miles on my previous example.

Karol,

You have already supplied a few parts for the project and I am sure I will order more from you as the project develops.

Paul,

Don't expect rapid progress. I think I will do well if I can finish the machine within 3 years.

It didn't take long to find the first problem. The frame appears to be twisted. If you look at the bubble on my spirit level it shows almost level at the front of the frame but well away from this on the rear forks and it changes consistently as you go along the frame. The photos should enlarge so that you can see the spirit level bubble easily enough.
I spotted the problem because I couldn't screw the gearbox pivot bolt in far enough when I did the trial assembly. So I took a tap to the thread and found that it was way out of line. These things happen!
