That is a good point, though I can see me using a washer like Mick as the head of the screw really isn't that much bigger than the slot.

By design I guess. Helps you get the strip flat against the tank - you push it down and forwards, the screws slide in their slots, you tighten them when you are happy.

Slots by design to allow for adjustment are a given, but slots almost the same width as the fastener heads are more contentious.

I'm at the Shere hill climb tomorrow, I'll be screwing the strip on properly today. Should've bought a new pair of the spire nuts, it will take a little bit of fiddling, but I shall take a picture later.
Also, I'm putting the original air cleaner back on, it is in great condition so a shame to just leave the carb with the bellmouth on, but I forgot to order the inlet rubber!

I've always thought the grotty one was original, but considering that the shiny one has been polished through, presumably for replating, perhaps they both are?

I would certainly use a washer of some description. Ariel did mention somewhere that to 'avoid needless repetition nuts and washers are not usually mentioned. Also with sheet metal items like this some allowance tends to be made to allow for a less than precision fit by the use of slotted holes etc. The recess around the screw hole in the strip is correct and does look rather odd as though there should be a washer with a large OD.
