1953 Square Four 1000cc for sale

Post by jerryrich »

1953 Square Four 4G MKII for sale in Gloucestershire.
Bought by my late Father in the late 70's as a fully restored machine which he rode on and off for a number of years until it got too heavy for him to handle. From memory the engine ran very well at the time, the bike has not been used since the 90's and has been dry stored since then.
Unfortunately I don't have any documents relating to the rebuild, nor do know who did it. It doesn't appear (at least to me) to have been tampered with ;) original 6V electrics & coil ignition, and apart from the paintwork on the petrol tank flaking off in places (also light rust and dirty petrol residues inside) the bike is in good overall condition considering the long storage period.
Registration doc. V5C, matching numbers, asking price £7000 o.n o.

The engine number might be 1953 but the tank is 1956-58 and the frame must be 1954 or 55 as it has an SU carb and the earlier rear brake cable lug. It is on the register from 1994 with a frame number GM 515 that is not in the despatch book although Ralph recorded it as EJ 183, which is a 1953 rigid frame! It would be nice to know what the frame number really is.

the frame number on the bike is ET155 which matches the V5, the engine number XJ183 also appears on the V5.
However, further down on the frame adjacent to the round lug (presumably the sidecar attachment) is another number which is indeed GM515.

GM 515 is a frame number, ET 155(0) is a casting number for a lug, but I would not poke the hornet's nest that is DVLA to try and get it changed. The page that this frame is undoubtedly listed on is missing, 10 of the 34 bikes have been identified with a further 2 frames, including yours known but no way to find out which of the remaining 24 entries is the right one. We have the right hand page listing model, speedo, remarks and despatch dates.
So it is a 1956 model with earlier crankcases.
Sorry you have the later brake cable lug from 1956 not the 1953-55 type. Is everyone asleep?

I got a frame number changed on a norton where a casting number had been used to reregister the bike in the 80"s. With photographs and a dating certificate from the Norton owners club. DVLA made the changes. Only about 5 years ago.

Another member had a bike registered using ET1550 as the frame number - we got it changed a few weeks ago using an extra page & some pictures on the dating certificate. The DVLA took about 6 weeks to sort it, but there was no problem.

Shout if I can help.
cheers
