The 1937 parts books shows the later style tank rubbers, with a -37 part number for them, so I'd say the tank rubbers changed for the 1937 models.

See this list from Hunter rubbers : /https://www.james-motorcycles.com/wp-co ... eces-3.pdf

you see they state 1937/'53 but I dont know if that means from '37 or including '37

anyway, the spot where the happy family picture was taken did not change :

Indeed! Just a bit more crowded.

So which is the correct pattern for the paint?

The Danish Ariel club used to have these drawings on their website but atm that is not working (?)

what I see is that the enclosed valve singles from modelyear 1938 (started somewhere late 1937) have the kneegrips you have ,
while the open valve 1937 modelyear have the 'smaller' kneegrips .
Maybe there were 'transition' models with both tank designs at the same time from the production line or to use up stock?

My 1937 VH came with the later style knee grips which looked to be original to the bike.

The Square Four which went to Arthur Bourne, editor of The Motor Cycle on 4th Sept 1936, being only the 5th of the pushrod models, has "New patt tank knee grips" as one of its notes so I think we can be fairly certain that the later style grips were introduced for the 1937 model year.

There is naturally some variation in the original shapes of the painted tank panels and lining, depending on whether Bert, Tom or Bill did the paintwork, whether they were having a good day or a bad day, etc. etc.
