I am obviously missing something here, but unless the chain case has only half the level of oil in it down from the level plug, the oil is lost while running, I don't lose anything when the engine is stopped.
Have I missed an oil seal at the back of the chain case, if I have it was not there when I stripped the engine, and can't see one on any drawings

Thanks Simon, as I have the engine oil tight I can go back to the old adage for the chain case, when it stops leaking put some more oil in.

Re: SQ4 MK1 primary chain case oil level
When I rebuilt my Mk1, I found that oil was leaking out along the bottom two clutch dome screws. On investigation I found that they are not blind holes; and are below the oil level.

Hi
Just curious, is the square four primary different from most classics which operate best with the oil just touching the bottom of the chain run and if so why?
Regards Mick

Think you are right Mick.
If the level plug was 1/4" lower the chain would not be drowned in oil causing the problem
Happy days.
