Avon tyres, lack of

Post by Roger Gwynn »

As Avon Road Riders are no longer available I fitted a Kenda K657 Challenger last year, on the rear, that looked very similar to the RR and handled well, the down side was that it is now worn out after 3,300 miles, the Avons would last 6-8,000 miles. I have just fitted a Dunlop Gold Seal, now made in Japan, if I remember I will let you know how that lasts. I have found before that cheap tyres do not last well, I always thought that they did not grip as well but lasted a long time due to hard rubber, not the case it would appear.

Ah 400x18 a wider range is available, mine is 19". Would like to fit a Conti, I used them on my Guzzi and liked them

According to my sources (Andover Norton!) Avon RoadRiders should be back in production in 2027. Dunno if they'll still be making the 19" sizes they had before though.
Andover Norton are recommending (and supplying) Heidenau K65 100/90-19 TL 57H Universal (Front or Rear) as an alternative. (This is for Commandos etc).
My airhead BM uses 19" front/18" rear and it loves Bridgestones (was BT45, now BT46). If they made a 19" rear I'd use them on the Ariel too.

The Heidenau's were my 2nd choice but more expensive than the Dunlop that my favourite dealer had in stock. I have been round the Heidenau factory, very interesting.
