57 Front hub problem

Post by TonyBaxter »

This is a good example of why you shouldn't take months to do a job, I'm sure I've missed something obvious.
Briefly, stripped out the aluminium full width hubs on my '57 NH as the rims were rusted. New rims and spokes, got the front laced to the hub in which I had placed new bearings. I cleaned up the bearing sleeve and the inside of the brake plate hole, as they had been a pig to separate. Mounted it up on the bike as I had replaced the fork tubes and everything, and wanted to set the wheel rim up for final truing.
This is where I am flummoxed, the brake plate only goes on about 7/8 of the way, then stops dead. It is nice and free on the sleeve, (I have actually tried it back to front). Where it stops it spins beautifully, though I don't know on what, as there is no shoulder on the sleeve, and just the bearing rims and felt washer the only things inside that could touch. The brake plate is clearly not all the way home. No, I didn't change the shoes or anything on the hub, all left exactly as they were.
So I tried mounting it on the forks and tightening up the spindle to make it settle into place. Still no movement, and the wheel jammed solid!
Obviously I've done something wrong, but no idea what :(

Sorry pictures have gone sideways and not in order. Last shows gap, brake plate to hub. Second is spacer between brake plate and right hand leg, all ok as far as I can tell.
First picture wheel spindle on the left hand side.

Can someone confirm that these dimensions are correct please? I can't help but think that the spindle isn't going far enough into the hub, but if it is up against the RH bearing sleeve, then that means the sleeve should go further, in which case surely the brake plate will be even less likely to sit against the hub face? :?
Note, brake plate removed for clarity of spindle position.

SOLVED!! :D
Schoolboy error, nothing to do with the spindle, the bearings or the sleeve. Anyone spot my mistake? The very first picture on this thread may give it away.....

You have fitted the 2 lock rings in the wrong holes!

Yes! Both normal R/H thread so didn't even think about it when they were lying on the bench
Oh well, anyone else putting their hubs together can read this and save themselves some time and much head-scratching!
