J.Coleman: I'd love to have an oil scraper ring - I have one, from Draganfly - but the ring land in my piston cannot accommodate it.
My valve guides are new, and while slightly looser than optimal, not enough to puke a lot of extra oil, I think.
I'm thinking again that perhaps due to using slippery oil the rings have not properly seated?

The inlet valve guide should have very little clearance. The exhaust about .003" and a good finish or the wear rate is High. 3 comp rings is OK. I have a W/NG with no oil rings and it Blows no smoke after 18,000 mikes of (fairly Hard) Use. Nev

Sounds like it may be wet sumping given the amount of oil

Roger, it does sound like wet sumping indeed. I have twice removed the oil pump and made sure the scavenger side is working correctly, and it flows back to the oil tank as it should. I get a steady stream back to the tank, at least at first.
I just remembered something - the old Clymer manual mentions the need for integrity of a small gasket inside the timing cover that seals an oil passageway. I found no gasket at that spot and inserted one. Has not smoked since then, but I still get the oil film on the oil tank.
Maybe I need to just ride it and give up the idea of having oil-free clothing.

Does anyone think the lack of a check valve in my timing case breather could be a contributing factor in the oil pumping?

I wouldn't think so But your rings may not have seated yet. Get a few more miles on it. What size oil Pump is on it? Nev

Unseated rings are my suspicion as well. I don't know what size oil pump is on it, only that it is brass and aftermarket. I believe the passage - at least the supply side - is larger than the stock unit. I got the stock one with some spares when I got the bike, and if the replacement is pumping too much oil I could always put the stock one back on. I confess "too much oil" is not a problem I have run into in the past.

Too much oil will not be a problem unless it is one of the geared Morgo pumps, standard plunger ones are OK.
