hard kickstart

Post by Terry.C. »

Hi All,Some thoughts and help please.
After a complete strip down of my 1953 Ariel NH engine It came down to re-assembly on the bench. Nothing was found to be any cause for concern and re -assembly commenced. All went well and the engine turned over easily even with the head on. The gearbox was fine The problem came about when I re-installed everything back in the frame. All the parts were assembled clutch, chains etc. Now this is where the problem starts.
Trying to kick over the engine the kick starter is very hard to push down and I can actually stand on it with no easy movement. Any ideas on what is wrong and the solution?
Many thanks in anticipation
Regards
Terry

As the engine and gearbox turned over OK on the bench I suspect the problem lies somewhere in the primary side but hard to say what. As always you will have to take it apart to fix it, so take it apart to find out what is wrong. Dismantle or disconnect one part at a time until the problem goes, this way the area of the problem can be isolated.

If you push on the kickstart, with the clutch pulled in, what happens?
cheers

From what you say in response to Simon's question, it sounds as if the problem may be friction between the back of the clutch basket and the primary case. Have you got the hardened steel washers fitted either side of the brass needle roller cage?
