Square Four

Just a little tail from many years ago.

Years ago our window cleaner had a Mk2 4 pipe square four on a tradesman's box, I looked totally original
but as though it had never been cleaned from new, it was filthy, it didn't like rain and wouldn't start
without a push, you would think with all the much and oil it would have been waterproof, but when
started it sounded beautiful best sounding one I ever heard not a tap rattle knock or whine, and
smooth as silk. it must have made a impression as this was about 50 years back.

Back in the early 1970's when I still wasn't old enough to ride anything I remember going to some kind of show and seeing an immaculate Mark 2 Square on a sporty single-seat sidecar. I was there with an equally young friend, the owner came over to chat to the two youths admiring the very shiny bike with the very 1970's paint finish and explained that it was finished in plum with gold fleck.

I don't think I can remember what the show was or even where it was but I can certainly remember the bike and it's paint scheme. I'd love to know what happened to it (I don't think I've ever seen it again).

3 more cylinders than you NEED.. How would it be as a watercooled V4? They DO have Good BALANCE and NO engine gyroscopic effect. Nev

I bought a Mk 1 in the mid seventies for £60, from a friend who had given up on it. A frame with wheels and handle bars attached, everything else was in two plywood tea chests.
During 2022 to 2023 I rebuilt it. It hit the road in July 2023. It has now completed just over three thousand miles. The best £60 I ever spent. Even though it has cost a bit more since.
