Those lobes need pretty good lube to not wear. AND the splines. I just Point chain oil spray in that direction. The BIG filler hole lets you do that. I jhaven't had any problems Over a LONG time Now. Had my first Ariel in 1956. A 20 year old RH 350 that I fitted a single port W/NG enclosed Valve Head on.. Nev

Nev - I also point the can in that direction. With my Velo MSS, I also get an amount of blow by from the crankcase which builds up over time into a handy oil reservoir within the chaincase. So much so that it needs to be drained now and then, but as this is 5 minute job I am not too concerned. Naturally I also check the oil level in the tank....Not sure if this happens on my VB, but with regular sprays the primary chain seems to be well lubricated. Of course, it all depends how much mileage you put on the bike. I cannot say I worry too much at less than 1000 a year, then it all gets checked out over winter.

An overheated Primary chain can be ruined in a short distance. say 100 miles. My Sloper BSA's used to ruin them regularly.
