I readily concede this particular problem applies to my 1931 Sunbeam model 9, but I have seen Ariels with similar. Essentially, the rear stand
(when up) locates into a rear clip affixed to the mudguard - please see photos. Despite careful attention to setting the gap on the clip, the stand occasionally drops down when riding - especially when going over a hump/pothole/politician - else the metal just relaxes over time, the gap opens up and the stand drops down. It is deeply annoying when this happens as of course I have to stop, dismount, kick it back up and hope it doesn't happen again - which it does about 10 minutes later.....
The challenge therefore is to come up with a very simple device to prevent the stand from dropping down when in the clip
Note that the bike has no side stand, so whatever the device is, it must be operable when I am holding the bike upright with my left hand.
No bungees allowed on the grounds they look awful and are the bodge of last resort.
Very many thanks
Mark

Re: Rear stand retaining clip
hi why use a p or r clip in your clip or use a strong rubber o ring like i use on mine
Re: Rear stand retaining clip
Hi
First thought would be to fit a small fork shaped gag when the stand is secured up, the fork should prevent the two sides of the clip moving apart whilst installed and be located above the stand:

Mick/Johnny - but how do you affix/remove the fork shaped gag or the extra P/R clip when wanting to put the stand up or down - remember I have no side stand. Wouldn't like to bend down that far and fiddle about there whilst trying to hold the bike up.

Re: Rear stand retaining clip
hi, if you don't want to bend down because of no side stand which can be unsafe the best thing you can do is get a new clip made out of stronger spring steel
Re: Rear stand retaining clip
Stronger steel may keep the stand within the clip, but it may then be difficult to lever the stand under the clip and into place with just my right foot - as I do now. You also need a certain amount of "springiness" in the clip to get it through the gap, and then for the clip to return to the original position to keep the stand in pace. Better quality spring steel perhaps? At present, the clip is probably not rebounding as well as it ought to. Mind, it is quite possibly 94 years old!
