Help needed with GB gearbox

Post by Christoph.Baudisch »

Hi, I am just busy with dismantling a GB gearbox for my 1953 VB.
Unfortunately the selektor fork as shown in pictures will not come out.
There is no chance for turning or axial moving and I will not damage it as I have no others.
When dimantling bearings from alloy housing I put them into the oven (when wife is not at home  )
and they come out easy. But here what to do ?
Any clever idea is welcome.
regards
Christoph

Hi

Try pouring penetrating oil around the shaft and housing, then move the shaft axially from the exposed end, it should move a little which will allow the penetrating oil to do it's thing, a bit of 'exercise' and the shaft will come out.

You could extract the shaft using heat and a press but I'd give the gentler approach a try first.

Regards Mick

hi i would heat the casing up and give it a spray with WD40 etc when it is cooling down or soak it in diesel for a few days

Give it more heat!!
Might be better off using a hot air gun or a blowlamp on the outside of the casing where the select fits. With an oven the steel selector will be heating up to the same temperature, if you just use local heating on the case it might not (and you could wrap it in a damp cloth to help keep the temperature down).
But I find with stubborn things like this that you need to get them really really really hot before they play nicely.

Aluminium expands a lot more than steel when heated. That's the main thing you have going for you there. Let some penetrating oil soak in a bit. Nev

Thank you all for your ideas. I was busy with a hot air blower and some oil. Meanwhile the selektor fork
rotates for a few degrees as the the geometry of the housing allows that. Now it is in bath with diesel
and meanwhile I will think about an extractor to move it in axial direction.
