I have eventually, after eleven years of an arms length "restoration", restarted the whole process off again from the very beginning (a story for another time).
I am, now, faced with the decision to replace or not the big end bearing on my 1937 500cc Red Hunter (yes polished steel flywheels)
There is no vertical movement at all but, to my mind, a worrying amount of side play.
1/8" movement laterally at small end and about 20 thou sideways at big end.
The completely mullered purifier plug had not been attended to and I assume that lack of service in the past could have contributed to any potential big end failure.
I am in the process of extracting the plug but am nervous about splitting the flywheels having spent many an hour innocently learning from the Forum about the exacting methods of balancing upon reassembly!
Sideways wobble is discussed elsewhere but I would be grateful for a pointer.

Re: VH big end play
If it were me, I'd leave it alone. They do have some sideplay, but its radial play thats really important (as I'm sure you know).
