GB GEARBOXES

Post by I Rea »

Hi my 1954 mk 2 sq 4 came with a Ba gearbox. The people at dragonfly doubt it is suitable. I have found someone with more than 50 burman gearboxes. Am I right in understanding that I can use any gb gearbox as long it has the right mainshaft. Are there any gearboxes I should avoid. Also the clutch fitted seems wrong it has no cush drive, the chain wheel is bolted to the clutch basket and has no bearings of any kind . Any help or suggestions appreciated.

To start with I would consult a parts book, which will answer many of your questions. The shock absorber is on the crank not in the clutch. The BA gearbox is suitable if it has the correct shell as the whole gearbox was moved to the left to allow for the different chain alignment to the other models. The pre-war BA SQ4 boxe numbers begin 2BA, for post war see the engine and frame list on Draganfly's website. When the GB was fitted the same requirement was satisfied by having a longer mainshaft and a longer output or sleeve gear. The only other difference is a slightly different Kickstarter ratio. Again codes are on Draganfly's website, as are pictures of clutches showing where the bearing sits.
