The head locates down onto the barrel spigot, not on what you think is a gasket face.

When the head is loosly assembled (no bolts), you should see (with a torch), or be able to measure a few thou gap between the head and ...

Turned an allen key into a ball end.type.

Much easier access.

You might be able to find an old engineering shop that still has a Rank Taylor Hobson pantograph engraving machine and a skilled time served engineer that could engrave the cover.
