Interesting, and have either of you read The Quest for King Dick by William Whiteley? It concerns the Abingdon Works and their products, Ariel of course come up a number of times.

Yes! Both normal R/H thread so didn't even think about it when they were lying on the bench :roll:
Oh well, anyone else putting their hubs together can read this and save themselves some time and much head-scratching!

SOLVED!! :D
Schoolboy error, nothing to do with the spindle, the bearings or the sleeve. Anyone spot my mistake? The very first picture on this thread may give it away.....

Can someone confirm that these dimensions are correct please? I can't help but think that the spindle isn't going far enough into the hub, but if it is up against the RH bearing sleeve, then that means the sleeve should go further, in which case surely the brake plate will be even less likely to sit ...

Sorry pictures have gone sideways and not in order. Last shows gap, brake plate to hub. Second is spacer between brake plate and right hand leg, all ok as far as I can tell.
First picture wheel spindle on the left hand side.

This is a good example of why you shouldn't take months to do a job, I'm sure I've missed something obvious.
Briefly, stripped out the aluminium full width hubs on my '57 NH as the rims were rusted. New rims and spokes, got the front laced to the hub in which I had placed new bearings. I cleaned up ...
