Re: tyre (lack of) options
I have an 8" BSA finned half width hub on both my Ariels. I prefer this brake to a disc. You need a slightly different spindle. I got ACME stainless to make me one, but I gave the wrong size for the narrow length so I just filed down a standard one.

Re: Valve guides
Tried the dial guage test on a spare head and it works. I'll measure the actual head when I have it apart. Thanks for all the replies.

Re: Valve guides
Hi, all, thanks for the replies.
On reading Waller there seems to be 0.002" clearance on the inlet valve and 0.004" on the exhaust. I might try and measure this with a dial guage. I'll experiment with a spare head.

Re: Oil scraper ring
Hi, Dave, it smokes a bit on start up. The head will need to come off anyway as the pushrod rubbers leak badly.

Valve guides
Hi all, again,
Since my 1938 VH motor uses oil I would like to check the clearance of the valve guides. How do I do that?

Oil scraper ring
Hi, all,
My 1938 VH engine seems to use oil. 1500 miles since a rebore. JP piston. Rings from Thorntons who supplied the piston. Is there a right way up for the oil scraper ring? Can it be fitted upside down?
Engine produces plenty of power.

They are not lying about 60mph cruising btw. Maybe slightly faster, if they can hold on!

If you remove the barrel you can get at the sludge trap with a cold chisel. Don't ask me how I know.

Use aluminium foil as a polishing rag with diet coca cola which is a very effective rust remover.
