I have Thorspark electronic ignition fitted to my Huntmaster, but it has always worried me what would happen if my dynamo died.
So with a little help from Chris Brindle at the LDR this weekend we cobbled together 8 AA batteries to give us 12 volts and connected it to just the ignition, the bike fired up and did the whole run back to the hotel,
My bike has a new name Duracell!!!

I have a question on this then.
How big is your standard battery, in there, and what is the current draw of the system and coils ?
The chances are that you'd get a fair few hours before your battery packed up. Of course, that is dependant on running without lights.

Hi, this is a good solution as a temporary battery that isn't conected to a charging system, as Steven has.
NiCad's go into something called "Thermal Runaway" if you keep charging them and they get hot. I saw this a few years ago when I did solar cars.
There's almost nothing you can do when the reaction gets out of hand.

I have a pair of 6volt sealed batteries in there at the moment John which would last a long time if the charging stopped but its nice to know I have a back up, the AA's would probably do around 150 miles as our ride round the Yorkshire dales was 112 miles and was still going. I didn't fancy flatting the batteries completely as my bike would know the worst possible place to stop on the M1 
I used some cheap alkaline batteries not the Ni cads Brenton
Maybe I could get 300 miles out of the same setup on a single?
