Ancient Ariel sign

Post by wade.edwards »

Ariel sign.jpg
I am tasked with creating a frame to hang this Ariel sign and would appreciate input. This is a double sided ceramic sign of unknown vintage but likely from the teens or earlier. If there is a way to positively identify a production date or where it might have been displayed, that would be helpful.

I don't want to make just any hanger as it should be age appropriate and suitably stressed to better match the wear displayed on the sign itself.

It will hang so that it is suspended through the two holes on the top edge.

All input appreciated,
Wade

Would a beaded edge tire (with rim?)be large enough to mount it in? , as a sort of resembling the early Serpent sign ?

That sounds interesting, Vincent. The sign is 20 inches wide and 18 inches in height.

i would use some 25 x 6mm flat black iron and make a frame round it with a 8mm gap all round and fix it to the top with the two holes you can make it swing like wen they was outside a shop or workshop

Thanks, Johnny. I have a good idea of how to structure it and of course I earn a living making things from metal, so this will be a fairly easy task. What I am hoping for is something archival,
like a picture of a comparable sign outside an Ariel shop from a hundred years ago. That would be over the top.

An early postcard. These signs are pre-1914. There are other signs, see http://www.arielcycles.me.uk/ephemera/signs.htm.
