Rear lamp identification

Post by alan.moore »

Has anyone any idea of what make this rear lamp is. It has a steel body with a aluminium type alloy base which screws onto the body both of which are threaded. The lens is plastic held in by a spring circlip. It is similar in size to a Lucas MT211 i.e about 1.5 inches Dia and 2 inches long.

Looking at the Lucas info it is not a Lucas.

Found another for sale on Ebay being sold by Paul Dunn ( motorcycle dynamos and mags man). He does not know what it is from either but must be a UK manufactured item.

Re: Rear lamp identification...Resolved

Thanks to those who looked at the topic. Looks like it is quite a rare item :D .

I think I've identified it as a 'Duco' 486 Electric Tail lamp. Duco was a trade name of Brown Brothers who were primarily an automotive accessory company which traded between 1902 and 1997 when it was taken over by Partco.
This is a page from the 1938 catalogue

Hi Alan,
Good work getting your Duco 486 electric tail lamp identified. I have a lamp similar to yours at home but it is missing the red reflector. I always wondered what it was as there are no markings. I can send a photo when I return home next month.

I'm not meaning to hijack your topic but to add information about another rare lamp to it.

The Lucas ST20 "Stop" Tail Lamp is shown on the same Brown Brothers catalogue page.
Lucas_ST20.jpg
In 1939 Ariel offered a modified rear number plate, 5648-39, to fit the Lucas ST20 "Stop" Tail Lamp.
This modified rear number plate was available for one year only.

The clip shown below is from 1939 Ariel Parts Book, Page 44

Shown below is a photo of this number plate from September 2007, page 14, Cheval.

Ray
You beat me to mentioning the ST20.....in fact it was your old post showing the Brown Brothers catalogue page that allowed me to identify my lamp.

To continue the topic of rear lamps, does anyone have any idea when Lucas changed from using glass lenses in the rear lamps to plastic and what type of plastic it was i,e Perspex?

Cheers
Alan

Hi Alan,
I have two MT110 lamps, each having a different type of lens.
Possibly the glass, jewelled lens is pre-war. This is what I have on the 37RH.
My NOS war department MT110 has a plain red plastic lens.
