Re: WNG petrol tank or not?
FYI:
Looking again at the WNG?? tank I have got..... after taking a few measurements of various dimensions, location and design of stamped in raised areas on underside, location of tank badges and mounting holes for badge screws I find it is the same as the NH panel tank I have. This would make sense in that in order to produce a tank for the WNG Ariel they took the current 350's panel tank and adapted it by not including the instrument panel and attendant holes for oil gauge pipe and speedo cable ...cheap and quick solution. (it may also be the case, as John Mitchell pointed out the OH/OG tank is the same design, that they used the tank from the 1939 OH/OG as a starting point)
This may also explain why earlier WNG tanks had the spot welded on bridge piece and screw holes for the enamel badges (with corresponding dimples into the side of the tank to give clearance for the end of the screw) whereas later on they did away with the bridge and screw dimples and used stick on badges. Maybe at this time (as Nev Mentions) they also included the small curved cutout on the front righthand side of the tank for the cables / wiring loom.
One other ID feature of a WNG tank would be the hole for the chain that attaches the filler cap to the tank ? It is my understanding that only the WNG had the chain fitted. My tank does have the hole for the chain but it is drilled slightly off centre but, as they would have been drilled by hand, I suppose its location being off centre means nothing.
Cheers
Alan

Re: WNG petrol tank or not?
Filled the WNG tank to the bottom of the filler neck with water. 12 litres spot on which is as close as makes no difference to 2 5/8 UK gallons so clearly a WNG tank

Re: WNG petrol tank or not?
Correct, a W/NG tank has this small hole for chaining the cap to the tank.
Given that these caps are now getting hard to come by I did the same to the '51 VH tank now on my W/VH.

Re: WNG petrol tank or not?
The indians do a fairly decent copy of the cap but they do not have the breather hole through the knob !!

Luis,
Have just sealed the inside of the tank with 'Slosh' so will post pics in a couple of days when it has fully gone off
Cheers
