W/NG timing chain

Post by LuisPaz »

Hola Amigos!

Yesterday I decided to investigate some oil losses, installing the motorcycle in height to work comfortably.
When removing the Magdyno chain cover, I found a chain of 36 pitches and not stretched. All badly assembled (or assembled as if it has been in a war front and without repairs to change) and with loss of oil.
Will I be able to adapt a bicycle chain with cranked link?
Also missing a felt whasher behind the magneto pinion....
Thanks in advances!

Hola Luis,
That sounds like the right pitch, but please check the roller diameter as some ASA standard chains differ in that respect. You shouldn't need a half link there, nor should you use a joining link, just re-rivet it,

Luis
The parts book says 1/2 x 1/8 inch and the chain should be 35 links, that's why you need a cranked link and also why your chain at 36 links is too slack.
The hexagon 'allen key' headed oil pump bolts also suggest someone has put the pump and probably chain (Hero made ion India) on in recent times. Oh and the split link is the wrong way round, closed end should be pointing in direction of rotation.

cheers
Alan

The split link is the correct way round Alan as the magneto rotates anti-clockwise.

Looks like someone has shaved the extractor thread off the mag pinion - so that an ordinary nut (with a big washer) can be used instead of the usual 'extended head' one?
Worth trying to get something original in place, to use with the factory extractor??

Yes it is desired to use the original puller. The mag shaft is easy to bend as it's a long way to the first ball bearing and the Lucas armature has only 2 screws holding it together. Nev

It all comes down to being in a country where there where no parts to keep it going, how deeper you're looking the more wors it gets, i think it even has metric M6 scews to hold the inner timing case.
This man Hans has every part you need for a WNG, penningmeester@arielclub.nl
