Clutch Adjuster
Morning
Wondering if anyone has a fix for this - the clutch on my 38 VH has been adjusting itself.
I noticed that the free play in the clutch cable was disappearing and no matter how I set it up it did the same thing. It turns out that the adjuster bolt that sits on the end of the pushrod was turning in the clutch arm (despite me thinking it couldn't possibly do that). So, I took the clutch actuating arm off the gearbox, nipped it up so it was snug on the adjuster bolt head and refitted it - and after a couple of hundred miles it did it again. Now the bolt head is a fairly good fit in the clutch arm, but clearly there is enough slack for it to turn given enough force (and I actually caught it mid-turn so I know that's what is happening).
Anyone else had this? Anyone got a solution? Bolt head doesn't look worn...
Tony

Re: Clutch Adjuster
There should be a ball bearing inside that adjuster. If it's not greasy it will fall out - I think that would cause the adjuster to bind on the end of the pushrod.
Have a look. It's 1/4" I think.

Re: Clutch Adjuster
Its more likely the pushrod ends aren't hardened, you just need heat the end on a gas stove till red hot then quech it in oil.

Re: Clutch Adjuster
Would that cause the adjuster to turn Ian? Pushrod seems fine...ian.scott wrote:Its more likely the pushrod ends aren't hardened, you just need heat the end on a gas stove till red hot then quech it in oil.

Re: Clutch Adjuster
It must be getting dragged around by the pushrod........check the pushrod isnt bent inside the mainshaft....also shouldnt drag when the clutch is engaged...Try some molygrease on all the contacting/ rotating parts....if the pushrod is soft steel,it wont harden, and needs replacing with a hardenable one,so you can harden both ends....A blob of weld on the adjuster hex would also be a rough and ready cure.

Hmmm...might be something in this. I'll do some investigating.john.whiting wrote:It must be getting dragged around by the pushrod........check the pushrod isnt bent inside the mainshaft....also shouldnt drag when the clutch is engaged...Try some molygrease on all the contacting/ rotating parts....if the pushrod is soft steel,it wont harden, and needs replacing with a hardenable one,so you can harden both ends....A blob of weld on the adjuster hex would also be a rough and ready cure.
