You can only really be insulted by people you respect. Owning an Ariel doesn't make you any nicer than owning something else. I have belonged to quite a few "one make" clubs. There are some advantages. you can be more proactive in 'mutual' activities and service the members better the more you specialise.. I think the Ariel thing works well as long as it doesn't exclude (actively) other makes.
The Ariel register in Australia has awards for the best non-Ariel. My wife has won it twice over the years on her Super X, so they must be a pretty discerning mob.
To answer john's concern here, You would hardly go out of your way to help someone who has added insult to injury. Nev

My dad rode Panthers and he clearly also thought they were dangerous. He had his fitted with stabilisers. I believe they called it a sidecar in those days. A Canterbury Carmobile, to be exact.

Hello;
Well it's a 53, one of only 3 Mk 1's made that year following the introduction of the Mk2 the same year. it must have sat in Selly Oak for many months,before dispatch, the racing is interesting, you sould follow that up,as nobody woulod have wanted it for any other reason with the better Mk2 on offer. It would'nt be track, most likely sprint or dirt.
Maybe not much help, as a square 4 fan,''I've three of them, I'd like to know.
Cheeky or wot!

Hi Guys. I've only just picked up on this thread following a comment someone made at the AGM.
I am truly sorry if the guy with the Colt felt he was rejected by us at the branch meeting. The branch was started by me in July 1990, and I was branch sec for 14 years before handing over to Wali Taylor. Now I have the reins again...
In all that time I promise you that I have gone out of my way to welcome prospective new members, or visiting members from other branches. I know from experience of other social groups how 'clicky' clubs can get, and how hard it can be to walk in and stick around for that first time.
I did talk to the guy with the Colt, not all evening I admit. I can't remember his name. Had I been branch sec at the time I would have noted it, as I have done at every branch meeting during my tenure. If he was seeking info about the Colt, then I agree he may well have met some difficulty. The problem is that the '50's Colt is pretty rare in Ariel circles, being actually a badged BSA. In 23 years of club membership I can only think of three at Annual Rallies, and we've never had a branch member with a '50s Colt.
Anyway, I'm indebted to Steve Carter of the Hants branch who has visited us twice, for jumping to our defence. We recently received visits from four prospective new members, two of whom have returned and joined the AOMCC, so we must have done something right there. I will also add with some embarrassment, that I chatted to a prospective new member all evening last October. It only transpired at 11:30pm that he wasn't an AOMCC member, had no intention of becoming one, had never ridden a motorcycle nor held any interest in them, and was a loner in the pub for a quiet evenings drink and I had assumed he was a potential recruit! Ho-hum.
Hopefully, the branch won't subside by December as Mr Tuxworth suggests it might. We have an attending membership of about 14, though the average is about 10. This is way lower than it was several years ago, but there is a tendency for owners to die I've noticed... The branch is 22 years old and I hope it will survive a while yet.
