Re: 'The SpAriel'
Thanks guys, nice to know this stuff is liked by more then only me !
There are some real engineers around on this forum, some very, very knowledgeable people.
I know a few, but they only watch it.
No problem in that and I am not moaning, but it would be nice to get a few more of these threads going on here.
So lets have :
Babbit casting in your shed
In line boring with Lidl handdrill.
Cast alloy MkII heads
Beat your own valanced mudguard
Pull tapered tubes for girders
Iron casting swan neck right hand footrests
any I missed ??

French chair
Since 33 years I know of this -in my eyes- most beautiful sidecar ever, period.
At a Dutch rally in the early eighties I took this pic and was smitten : From a great grandson of one the Bernardet brothers I got this picture:
It shows a Mr. Halhoute on a Motoconfort with Bernardet side during a record attempt in France 1938.
The former owner bought this sidecar in the South of France.
And apart from the color scheme being inverted it rather looks the same......
Streamlined mudguard & and a aeroplane tail.
It's called a 'Grand Sport Record du Monde Avion' !

Re: 'The SpAriel'
Just come back to this one and looking through the early posts I see you plan to put the Yamaha breather a long way from the crankcase outlet. I to have been looking at PCV (Positive crankase ventalation) breathers and they are best mounted as close as possible to the outlet for maximum efficience. Just thought I would throw this one in.
Your HD starter motor is mounted the same angle as my Commando F/Bed. The one problem is the clutch cable outlet. I have moved this on the gearbox and now have a better run. I also did a mod on the std Norton oil tank to miss the starter motor, not pretty but you cant see it.
Cheers Tony

Hello Tony
The story on the breathers is here : http://forum.arielownersmcc.com/viewt ... 9&start=40
The breather on the crankcase is now ± 15cm away just past the points lid on the magneto.
and the breather on the inlet rockerbox sits under the (hollow) nose of the dualseat, about 25cm away.

Re: 'The SpAriel'
This is how it now all looks.
Red lines are where the tubing runs.
Left down corner you see the PCV from the crankcase just aft the magneto.
Tube then runs underneath batterytray and up to the top of the frothtower.
Tube on second PCV comes from valve clearance check hole on the inlet rockerbox.

Re: 'The SpAriel'
Update on the Carbon Fiber tank.
Paiting has been done in some sort of red, it came close to the ''68 Monza Red' .
Done the pinstriping myself as I wanted to have a real Gold line on it.
3 layers of 22 Crt. Gold, no cheap brass powder paint for this tank !
Made a few pictures of the process;
Whole tank covered with paper to keep clean from spray & sticky fingers. Goldleaf is bought in small booklets, booklets without base papers are no Gold but Brass leaf.
So pay attention when buying as to the untrained eye Gold and Brass leaf look the same.
Each leaf must have a base paper to it, otherwise you cannot handle it.
Cut bits long and wide enough to cover the various straights and corners.
Keep others away from opening doors or walk past you in a hurry..... Spray with a suitable clear lacquer along the path .
You have to wait for ± 30 minutes to let the lacquer to dry, otherwise it's just to wet and will suck the Gold leaf together with the base paper in to one big mess.
Use a good pair of long tweezers, not the type you use to trim your nosehair, but slim & pointed ones. Use the pages from the (empty) booklet to push down the Gold firmly but dont rub to strong otherwise you will shift the Goldleaf. When removing the masking tape make sure you pull away rather flat and along & in the direction of the lining.
That way you prevent nibbling the edges of the Gold. Next step is adding the Ariel roundels, and a final coat of two pack clear.
