Oils for 1942 W/NG

Post by Michael.Brown »

Hi all,

Next question for you, what oils are recommended for Engine and Gearbox on the W/NG. Book says 50 HD for Engine and C 600 for Gearbox.

What do you all use?

I've got Morris SAE 50 in the oil tank, and a 50/50 mixture of Castrol LM and Morris SAE 50 in the gearbox.

Morris SAE 50 (again) in the primary case.
cheers

Hi Simon

Maybe a stupid question, but how do you do the mixing? Outside gearbox in a bottle or inside gearbox so that the moving gears make the mixture??

Thanks in advance!

Outside - makes it easier to get the mixture in the gearbox.

Get a battery drill and fashion a type of crude egg beater set up. Keep it warm and it will pour. Has to be thin enough not to channel. Check it by running in a gear on the rear stand if you are worried about where it ends up level wise. Nev

According to the W/NG factory Book, 2and 1/2 inches below filler orifice. Mix external and add grease to the oil constantly mixing till it thickens but still just runs at normal temperature. I don't know the proportions as it varies with the ingredients you use. Use a gear oil and a high temp grease . Some greases are thicker than others. Don't trust it to mix in the box as it may block oilways, particularly to the layshaft bushes. Nev

just to be different, the p/o ran mine on diesel detergent oil, he fitted a return oil filter and I have continued with this practice, I have taken her to the Irish rally and Latvian rally as well as quite a bit of running around and club runs, she seems to be quitter happy with this oil. kind regards
