Re. obtaining double diameter bars.
It might be worth having a word with Renthals. Back in 2002 Renthals in the States were being sued by a company that had patent for the double diameter bars Renthals were manufacturing. . They contacted me and I was able to find owners in the US who had bikes with good provenace which still had these bars and Ralph Hawkins supplied them with works drawings. They were then able to prove that these bars had been sold in the US much earlier than the patent. And they were able to get the case stopped
They were pleased enough to give the club a cheque for £1000. I don't know if thery still make bars of this type - I believe they were Alloy ones- but they obviously have the technology.
If you remind them of this, they may be inclined to help

"Dear Mr. Mitchell ,
I am writing to thank you, rather belatedly, for assisting Renthal last year
in relation to the US legal action for patent infringment which had been
taken against them by Tucky-Rocky (formerly Answer Products). As you
know we were able to find two Ariel bike owners in USA who gave
depositions, and we believe that the information about the Ariel handlebars
being in USA did assist Renthal in the overall circumstances of the legal
suit.

In fact, the matter is not now going to trial. After lengthy negotiations,
spurred by the outrageous legal bills facing both parties if they continued,
the matter was finally settled in November 2002. Renthal have ended up with
a licence under the 2 US patents belonging to Tucker-Rocky.

Thank you once again.

Kind regards

I have pursued the idea of making tapered steel bars and given up on it. The originals are a beautiful piece of work that was replaced by a 3 piece design of 7/8' bar clamped in a split sleeve. John Nash had some made . They don't look as good as the original tapers of course but are legitimate part numbered and illustrated Ariel parts supplied for later versions and REPLACEMENTS.. I looked at Renthals and others which are alloy and any I found were over 1'' in the middle section. One Buell model MAY fit which appears to be stainless steel. The middle (larger dia) section has to be the right length to fit the clamps (later models ) OR the rubber mounted style used earlier which are quite frankly a bit of a pain moving in the rubbers especially when travelling with tie downs in a trailer. This weekend I changed tyres and sorted out some other niggles and I used a blowtorch to heat up the bar and managed to bend it back down.
