tappet clearence?
tappet clearence?
Right, I have sorted out my timing but had to do it twice becase I first set TDC on the non compression stroke ( thats what working on 2 strokes for 28 years does to you ! )
Anyway, I have zero play on the rocker arm with both valves fully closed but can`t for the life of me find what the clearence should be so need a little more enlightening.
Cheers

Zero inlet and 2 thou exhaust. To set the zero inlet you need no play on the rocker arm but the ability to rotate the valve stem end cap.

Don't trust everything you get on the internet. The zero and 2 thou is set cold. It's another matter when the motor reaches operating temperature. Alloy and iron motors are very different for tappet settings as you have varying rates of thermal expansion of components. Nev

Re: tappet clearence?
From what I remember of the iron-head motor, the sure sign of a too-tight tappet is less (or very little) compression when the engine is cold but OK when hot.
(And remember that if you've been tightening the rocker-box bolts the rocker boxes might 'bed down' a tad, and if they do it does tighten the tappets.)

Re: tappet clearence?
Till you have retightened the rocker boxes a few times the tappet clearances will be affected by the gasket becoming more compressed so allow extra clearance till settled . Recheck clearances after any retightening..Check the valve lifter isn't interfering with the setting too. Nev
