W/NG Petrol Tank Badges...

Post by Paul Slootheer »

Look what we got here. This petrol tank belongs to a friend of my who is busy to restore a W/NG. I never have seen green Ariel badges before! Who can shine a light on this? :?:

I have a couple of those Khaki green tank badges. They are from my '39 VH which was in war use 'somewhere' between '39 and '44 when it was civilian registered. It is a mis-match of parts and the badges were screwed onto a rusty chrome and red 350 pre war Hunter tank, apparently having been 'liberated' from a tank probably similar to the one in your photo's, resulting in the damage around the fixing holes.

The top one is 'silvered' and the letter shadow outline and badge border shows this silver (like the ones in your photos'). The lower one is plain brass and the letter shadow outline and border is dark.

Both have the words W.O. LEWIS (BADGES) L? BIRMINGHAM cast on the rear. I contacted them a few years ago and was told they no longer have any historical info or the tooling for these badges.

I have seen these green badges and may still have one somewhere. The green is so far away from Ariel export green and so close to the khaki "green" that I have always thought that they must be for W/NG models rather than civilian models. I have only ever seen black badges on Ariel export green bikes.

My 1940 WNG has the same badges on its tank. Also has knee rubbers & a contract number starting 453.

Anyone know when they switched to decals?

The W/NG used petrol tank,- kick start,- and gear change rubbers at least untill 1942.
I think, but that is a assumption, that only the very early W/NG's did benefit ''the luxery'' badges.
My W/NG, which is a late 1940 model, only have the basic petrol tank with decals... :)
