v/ng or one that will fit fuel tank

Post by RTichard Woolnough »

On the French run this weekend not only did the fuel taps leak like a sieve, if I overfill the tank, that means to the top nut!, steam enthusiasts will understand this term, the perishing tank does the same, I am prepared to have the original repaired if possible but I want to use the bike in the coming couple of months so seek a tank that will fit, borrow/loaned/hired or even purchased. Thus can anyone assist and failing this, point me in the direction of a supplier for a replacement in the U.K which will fit, I will buy a new one if necessary of course but would like to do so in the U.K.? kind regards

Call these guys Richard:

I had a nice 'first paint' SQ4 tank from them a couple of years ago.
cheers

I may have sorted the original tank, lined it with POR15 and found a small seepage from underneath the n/s retaining bolt!, why oh why did the manufacturers insit on this idea of securing the tanks?, Ariel were not alone, I guess when new the bolt would have been shouldered to prevent it entering the retainer to much, however as with my AJS/bitsa I have turned up studs from a piece of brass rod shouldered them and located in the tank with locktite, little more tricky to mount the tank but prevents puncturing the bottom again, I hope!. kind regards

drill all the tank mounting bolts with a large enough hole, through the nex head, to take some fencing wire.
Some already have this but it will need widening.

Tighten up the bolts to just over finger tight and then run a straight peice of fencing wire between the two front bolts and another between the two back bolts.
Bend the wire at 90 degrees after it goes through each bolthead.

Now you won't have to tighten the bolts and risk puncturing the tank.
You will also not compress the rubber so much, by tightening the bolts to stop them falling out, and lose the rubber damping effect.

You can easily bend one side of the wire and pull it out by the side of the road, and then re-insert it afterwards.

(I got this one from Dave Owen)

Me too. Doesn't work harden like steel or iron wire and doesn't rust either.

yes the original bolts were drilled and wired, I shall also drill my studs and use wire, we shall see, to my great shame I have just noticed a message from Andy flatanker in my message box in excess of a month old offering the loan of a suitable tank, I opologise unreservedly for not replying sooner.kind regards
